What is Kizomba
Kizomba originates in Angola and grows out of the Semba beat, keeping a close musical and historical link to it. From the 1980s and 90s onward, kizomba music absorbed influences from Caribbean zouk, which brought a slower, more melodic beat well suited to close partner connection. It differs from Bachata through a closer, more fluid partner connection, with less individual improvisation and close attention to the music. It should also not be confused with Tarraxinha, a slower and more sensual style that grew out of the kizomba community itself, or with Semba, which has a faster, livelier step and more footwork. The connection between partners is what gives Kizomba its character: you learn to feel your partner's movement as much as the music itself. It is a smooth, intuitive and elegant dance.

- 01Do I need a partner to learn Kizomba?
- No. Classes are individual or in a small group. You work on technique and connection without bringing a partner.
- 02Kizomba vs Bachata: which should I learn first?
- It depends on your goal. Bachata has a larger social-event scene in Portugal; Kizomba has a more intuitive body connection for many beginners. Many students learn both in parallel.
- 03Is Kizomba suitable for people who have never danced?
- Yes. The basic step is approachable and you work on body presence from the first class. It is one of the most comfortable dances to start with.
- 04Is Kizomba easier than Bachata?
- Both require hip work and presence. Kizomba tends to have a slower basic step, but the partner connection demands focus.
- 05How long does it take before I can dance Kizomba at a party?
- With one class a week, most students feel comfortable dancing at a social event after 6 to 10 classes. The basic step and listening to your partner become solid within the first few classes, and the rest builds with regular practice.
- 06What should I wear to my first class, and what shoes are best?
- Comfortable clothing that lets your hips and legs move freely, such as leggings or flowy trousers, works well. For shoes, a smooth or suede sole is ideal, as it glides on the floor without gripping - rubber-soled trainers tend to catch and make turns harder. You do not need dance shoes for your first class; any closed shoe with low grip is fine to try it out.

- There is no fixed age limit for Kizomba - it is a dance that adapts to each person's pace and physical condition. Most students are adults, but the class adjusts to the level and goal of whoever is learning, whether that is dancing at social events or simply enjoying the movement.

Tarraxinha is even slower and more sensual, focused on small, precise movements within the embrace - it grew out of the kizomba community and is not an independent dance.
